Europe’s Famous Spa Towns

In a region with the world’s highest concentration of healing springs, the tradition of spa treatment dates back to the 14th century. Today, it is rightfully included on the UNESCO World Heritage List – not only for its therapeutic treatments and holistic approach to health, but also for its extraordinary architecture, unique natural resources and rich social life, which place it among Europe’s leading cultural centres.

Healing mineral springs and other natural resources, such as peat, therapeutic gases and radon water, have been used in the Karlovy Vary Region for centuries, and not even the rapid development of pharmaceuticals has replaced them. On the contrary, medical science values them more than ever and, in many cases, favours them for good reason.

Hotels in the spa towns offer therapeutic stays and wellness experiences for all age groups. They focus on treating a wide range of illnesses, recovery and prevention, while also helping to relieve everyday stress. Let yourself be pampered in modern wellness centres, indulge in top-class gastronomy and a rich cultural programme.

Wellness Fit for a King

Beauty and wellness stays here focus on relaxation and improving your overall well-being. During your stay, you can focus purely on relaxation – perhaps in a hot tub with a glass of champagne – or indulge in beneficial spa treatments. The original Roman Baths and the Royal Cabin are true highlights, where even King Edward VII of England enjoyed the spa.

Elegant Spa Architecture

The architectural gems of Mariánské Lázně include the spring pavilions, where you can peacefully sip healing water from deep beneath the earth. A historic landmark of Czech spa culture is the Neo-Baroque Main Colonnade, featuring the unusual ceiling frescoes Man and the Universe. The Singing Fountain will bring a smile to your face with melodies by classical composers as well as songs by Petr Hapka.

In the Heart of Slavkov Forest

Explore the surroundings of the town, situated on the edge of the protected Slavkov Forest Landscape Area. Follow the marked hiking and cycling trails to reach the Kladská Peat Bogs National Nature Reserve or discover the many mineral spring outlets. Are you a golf or skiing enthusiast? The local Royal Golf Club and Mariánky Ski Resort offer ideal conditions. Discover monuments of European significance – Kynžvart Castle, Teplá Monastery, and Bečov nad Teplou Castle and Château, home to the Reliquary of Saint Maurus, the Czech Republic’s second most valuable jewelled artefact after the Crown Jewels.

Františkovy Lázně

A trip to the Neoclassical town of Františkovy Lázně, surrounded by extensive parks and English-style landscaped woodlands, will feel like a journey back in time. Relax in the shade of the New Colonnade, guarded by sphinxes, cool off in the water park, or set out to discover the natural and historical treasures of the surrounding area.

Treatment for Pain and Infertility

Sulphur-iron peat, or the black gold from local deposits, helps relieve pain associated with arthritis and rheumatism and supports joint regeneration. It is used in the form of wraps or baths and complemented by a range of modern treatment methods. Františkovy Lázně is also renowned for infertility treatment, symbolically represented by the statue of a boy with a fish.

A Walk Through a Lunar Landscape

Františkovy Lázně is shaped by Neoclassical and Empire-style architecture and is distinguished by the connection between its buildings and nature. A walk through the town will soothe you, while the sight of its beautiful buildings set against the natural park will bring peace to your soul. If you have the opportunity, take a trip to the nearby Soos Nature Reserve. Nicknamed the Czech Yellowstone, it is a vast peat bog at the bottom of a dried-up lake, with bubbling mud volcanoes. The youngest extinct volcano, Komorní hůrka, is also nearby. Seeberg Castle and Vildštejn Castle are well worth a visit as well.

Lázně Jáchymov

A town where the story of the atomic age and radon spa treatment began. Jáchymov, where Marie Curie-Skłodowska discovered radium in pitchblende, has preserved the genius loci of its glorious past, when the first radon spa was established here and people travelled from all over the world for treatment.

Radon water is used in spa treatments. The therapeutic effect of radon – a chemically inert gas – comes from low-intensity alpha ionising radiation. When the body is repeatedly exposed to it in small doses, it stimulates beneficial processes such as the repair of damaged DNA, tissue regeneration, increased secretion of the anti-inflammatory hormone cortisol and the “happiness hormone” endorphin, and activation of the immune system. This explains the exceptional therapeutic and pain-relieving effects of radon baths.

Radon baths are a traditional treatment for age-related conditions in general (anti-ageing), as they strongly counteract the effects of environmental oxidative stress on the body.

  • Radon baths (the minimum effective course is 10 baths, with a maximum of 24; administered six times a week at 36 °C for 20 minutes, followed by a dry wrap)
  • Rehabilitation – therapeutic exercise
  • Physical therapy
  • Massages
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Physical, instrumental and biochemical diagnostic examinations
  • Special therapy – brachyradium therapy (so-called “Jáchymov boxes”)
This European speciality is suitable for treating chronic painful musculoskeletal conditions that do not respond to other commonly used types of pain-relief treatment. It uses the pain-relieving effect of gamma ionising radiation, applied locally to the painful structure through the specialised method of brachyradium therapy. The treatment provides patients with pain relief lasting many months.

Před stresem do hor

Mix dávné i moderní historie

Kromě Muzea Královská mincovna v Jáchymově, kde se dozvíte o hornické tradici, historii ražby tolarů a lázeňství, navštivte Latinskou knihovnu s historickými spisy včetně Starého zákona z 13. století.
