Sacred architecture will leave you in awe.
Ecclesiastical monuments attract attention not only as places of living spiritual activity, but also as architectural gems with rich histories and often outstanding artistic decoration. As an expression of gratitude for hardships overcome, the Church and nobility had plague columns, chapels, small churches and Ways of the Cross built. In the Karlovy Vary Region, you will find many small structures, such as chapels, wayside shrines, statues and gazebos, as well as magnificent churches and monasteries. Among the most remarkable are the Church of St Mary Magdalene with its underground crypt and burial chapel containing remains from a closed cemetery, the monumental Church of St Nicholas in the centre of Cheb, and the Premonstratensian Monastery in Teplá with the second-largest monastery library in the Czech Republic.
Step into the role of a pilgrim and discover places shrouded in legends. In Starý Hrozňatov stands the Maria Loreto pilgrimage complex with a Way of the Cross and a meditation garden. A legend about the Provostry Complex in Chlum Svaté Máří says that its foundation is connected with a small statue of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, which mysteriously kept returning to the same place. The Sacred Precinct in Ostrov, the oldest early Baroque central-plan building in Bohemia, is also certainly worth mentioning, as is the restored Baroque Way of the Cross in Valeč, which leads to Calvary Hill with a beautiful view of Valeč Castle.
