A landmark of Jáchymov is the 16th-century Church of St Joachim on Republic Square, whose construction was financed by wealthy mine owners and the nobility.
It was originally intended to serve as the first Protestant church, but after the Battle of White Mountain it was reconsecrated as a Catholic church. It is considered a pilgrimage site, with believers coming here especially for the statue of the Virgin Mary from Mariasorg. In front of the gates stand fifteen memorial stones called the Way of the Cross to Freedom. From the original furnishings, a Renaissance grille by Jáchymov pewterer and bell founder Hans Wildt, dating from 1575, has been preserved.
