Legend has it that the pilgrimage site in Chlum Svaté Máří was founded thanks to a small Gothic statue of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus.
A young journeyman discovered it by the roadside on Chlum Hill and wanted to take it home, but the statue mysteriously kept returning to its original place on its own. Around 1400, the Church had a pilgrimage church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene built there. It was later expanded into an extensive Baroque complex with a three-nave church and provostry, designed by Kryštof Dientzenhofer.
