When winter knocks on the castle gates, it means the end of history trips for many tourists. But did you know that even in winter there are places where you can feel the magic of the past? Forget the old rule that you can only visit castles and chateaus in the warmer months. In the Karlovy Vary Region, you will find sights that will welcome you even on frosty days. Which ones are they? Let’s discover them together!
Loket Castle: medieval fortress in a frosty embrace
The castle that turns into a rock and the rock on which the castle grows. The medieval castle of Loket, surrounded on three sides by the Ohře River, is the heart of the picturesque town. Climb the castle tower and be amazed by the view! You will see a square with a Baroque column, picturesque houses and parts of the original walls below.
Loket is one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in the Czech Republic. Its massive walls and towers, which once protected the kingdom from its enemies, now entice visitors with breathtaking views and mysterious stories. The charm and atmosphere of the Slavkov Forest in the background make a visit to Loket in winter an unforgettable experience. The castle is open every day from 9 am to 4 pm.
Cheb Castle: stories from the times of the emperors
The imprints of history can be felt at Cheb Castle literally at every step. Cheb Castle is famous not only for its history, but also as the only place in the Czech Republic with the original Stauff imperial phalanx founded by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. However, due to the war in the 18th century, only the torso of the palace and the Romanesque fortress with the mighty defensive Black Tower and the unique Romanesque-Gothic chapel have survived.
This castle is open even in winter and offers visitors the opportunity to enter a time when this place resonated not only with the stories of famous royal weddings, but also with the dark shadows associated with murder. From November to the end of March, Cheb Castle operates in winter mode, during which the castle grounds are open only on weekends, always from 10am to 3pm. The Black Tower also remains accessible in suitable weather conditions, offering visitors a unique view of the entire town.
Castle Ostrov: Rare treasures of European families
In the heart of the town of Ostrov lies Ostrov Castle. It is a large complex of buildings with the original town castle, which served a defensive function. The castle will enchant you with its rich history and unique exhibitions that reveal the lives of famous European noble families. The exhibition Šliks on the Ostrov Estate – Wealth and Power presents rare exhibits, including one of the four execution swords of the executioner Jan Mydlář.
Enjoy the magic of winter at Castle Ostrov! It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30 am to 4 pm. Come and enjoy a peaceful winter walk among historical treasures.
Sokolov Castle: classical history and mysterious treasure
Sokolov offers not only a glimpse into the mining past, but also many interesting places for nature and culture lovers. The dominant architectural pearl, Sokolov Castle, represents just the tip of the iceberg of what the city actually has to offer. If you are looking for a combination of history, nature and authentic Czech charm, Sokolov is the right place for your next travel expedition.
Touring the interiors of the classical chateau, you will find yourself in the heart of history, where you will learn fascinating information about the mining and processing of ores and coal, the production of fine porcelain or the traditional craft of lace and musical instruments. There is even a Sokolov treasure from the 1990s hidden in the castle cellar.
